The Pioneer Library System is preparing a Readers Theater production of Harper Lee’s To Kill A Mockingbird as part of its third consecutive The Big Read. The live, on-stage presentation will tour Cleveland, McClain, and Pottawatomie counties during the first week of March, 2009, with performances in both school and public venues.
Auditions will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, January 10, in the Lowry Room of the Norman Public Library, 225 North Webster in downtown Norman. Actors need not prepare anything in advance. Scripts for cold readings will be handed out at the audition.
The casting call is for five readers, two men and one woman over the age of 30, and one boy and one girl between the ages of 10 and 15, to take on the roles of Atticus Finch, Heck Tate, Maudie Atkinson, Jem, and Scout. The two children’s roles may be triple cast with performers from each of the three counties that comprise the Pioneer Library System service area.
Because of the travel required for this touring show, parents are encouraged to attend the audition with their children to get a detailed rehearsal and performance schedule. The library system will provide no transportation to or from the rehearsal and performance venues, so the adults, children, and parents need to be aware of the commitment they are making by auditioning. Parents of the children in the cast will also have to make arrangements for their children to miss school during the tour.
