The Pottawatomie County Literacy Program is offering a free, six-week series of English Conversation classes at the Shawnee Public Library July 21 through August 25. The classes will be held on Monday evenings 6 – 7:30 p.m. English conversation facilitators will help participants practice their English skills by engaging them in “everyday life” types of conversations like talking on the phone, going grocery shopping and discussing the local news.
During the class, students near the same level of English proficiency will be paired together to practice their English speaking skills. In addition to the conversation classes, students will also have the opportunity to use the technology at the library to supplement their learning with the Oxford Picture Dictionary Interactive and Rosetta Stone language software.
Each participant will receive a free copy of the monolingual New Oxford Picture Dictionary to use in class and at home. The first class will include a library tour to familiarize students in using the library and extend an invitation to sign up for a library card.
The conversation classes are made available through a community literacy grant from the Oklahoma Department of Libraries. For more information, contact the Pottawatomie County Literacy Program at 273-3334.
