The Fit for Life program in March focuses on nutrition as a contributing factor for healthy brain function. Throughout 2009, the Virtual Library will highlight various online resources that can assist you in getting fit for life. Our first featured free online resources is MedlinePlus.
MedlinePlus gathers credible medical information sources into one convenient location and is available in over 40 languages. Many online health information services provide questionable or unverified medical information and feature a lot of advertisements. MedlinePlus is the product of a joint venture between the U.S. National Library of Medicine and the National Institutes of Health and links to only credible medical publications and contains no advertisements.
MedlinePlus gathers information on over 750 topics regarding conditions, diseases and wellness. MedlinePlus provides information concerning the effects of drugs and dietary supplements, a dictionary of medical terminology, and a complete medical encyclopedia that includes pictures and diagrams. It is designed to be easily searchable with both a browse by category and a keyword search function. Information is subdivided into useful categories that include age, gender, and ethnic group to name a few.
In short, MedlinePlus offers one stop shopping for all of your medical information questions from a reliable source.
