The American Indian Festival, November 10, was a huge success. Staff member Stacy Hensley chaired the event and all of the Newcastle staff worked very hard making the festival run smoothly.
The Newcastle Public Schools distributed flyers and Kathie Thomas did two live feed interviews. Over 115 volunteers, many from the Chickasaw Nation, participated. Caroline Dulworth and Cindy Stevens from the Pioneer Service Center manned the check-out desk and Anne Masters helped host the Chickasaw Children’s choir.
Sponsors were The Chickasaw Nation, Pioneer Library System, Newcastle Friends of the Library, the Newcastle PTO, City of Newcastle and Chamber of Commerce. The Newcastle Police Department helped with traffic and crowd control.
Gabe Burris from the Chickasaw Nation helped plan and organize the event and was instrumental in organizing the entertainment. The Chickasaw Nation donated $1,000 to pay for the Moon Bounce, t-shirts for volunteers and lunches for presenters.
It was definitely a community event. It is hard to estimate attendance, but we believe more than 1,000 people participated. We are proud to have this partnership with the Native American community and the City of Newcastle.
