The art of stage makeup brings to life magical creatures and death-bringing zombies. It can bring a whole new world to life through the right combination of colors and shades.
And working with stage makeup is a natural for teenagers, where their daily life is almost a metaphor for wearing a different look.
“They’re experimenting with new masks and a new personality,” said Erin Hicks-Cheek, local stage makeup artist, actress and instructor who has worked with hundreds of young people in the art. “It’s one way of exploring who they want to be, and makeup can be a quick way to change who you are.”
Hicks-Cheek will bring her workshop to the Newcastle Public Library at 2 p.m. Friday, June 7, as part of this year’s Summer Reading Program for teens. Participants in her workshop will learn a few fundamentals of stage makeup and get to try out a few basic techniques. And they aren’t too young to get on the road to some amazing work.
