The Hour of Peril by Daniel Stashower
As a student, I learned of the assassination of Abraham Lincoln in 1864, but I did not know of the plot to assassinate him in Baltimore prior to reaching Washington for his first term inauguration. The author uses a great number of pages outlining the life of detective Allan Pinkerton who was one of the men responsible for Lincoln’s safe arrival in the nation’s capital. Honestly, I wish there was less Pinkerton and more Lincoln, but I left the book with new knowledge and an appreciation of the peril Lincoln faced daily.
