 After a particularly frigid winter, spring is finally arriving in Oklahoma. For many gardening souls, it is time to think about working outdoors in the soil. Sharing gardening tips, as well as sharing plants, can be an enjoyable part of the gardening experience. Take away new plants for your yard or garden, and find homes for your excess plants at the Moore Public Library Plant Exchange scheduled for Saturday, April 3 from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon. The event is come-and-go: you are invited to attend the expert’s presentations and/or bring your plants, bulbs, cuttings, seedlings or seeds for trade or give-a-way.
This is the third annual plant exchange for Moore and this year the Moore Public Library will be partnering with Moore’s Community Garden. The Community Garden’s expert, Lindsay Packard, will be presenting “lasagna gardening”: a unique method of layering that is a fast and easy way to begin a garden in your yard using sheets of soil, newspapers, and peat moss.
At 10:30 a.m. Tracey Payton, Horticulture Extension Educator for Cleveland County OSU Extension Service, will be speaking on Six-Legged Super Heroes: Beneficial Insects in the Garden. Payton will be giving tips on how to recognize and utilize insects to your advantage. Tracey’s presentation will last approximately 30 minutes, allowing time for questions and gardening discussions.

 Question of all types are on the minds of many families sending students off to college this fall. That’s why the Moore Public Library is partnering with the Oklahoma Guaranteed Student Loan Program’s (OGSLP) UCanGo2 Organization to help families learn more about preparing, planning and paying for college.
The library, located at 225 S. Howard in Moore, is hosting a UCanGo2 College Countdown event on April 1, 2010 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. During this event, students and parents will learn where to find the FAFSA and how to avoid common mistakes. In addition, they’ll get helpful answers to common questions about grants, scholarships and financial aid options.

 The Celtic Dancers in Diana Rodgers’ All About Irish Dance school are not from Ireland—they are from Oklahoma. But with authentic steps, costumes, and music, they transport their audiences to a wee-bit of the old country. Just in time for St. Patrick’s Day, they will be performing during Kids Spring Week on Tuesday, March 16 at 2:00 pm at Moore Public Library 225 South Howard in Moore.
Dancing traditional and modern dances, the students of All About Irish Dance demonstrate the lively, intricate moves that make Celtic Dance unique. There are reels, jigs, treble jigs, and a dance called the horn pipe. Celtic dance is highly disciplined, with backs straight, arms to the side, and hair flying. The costumes for both boy and girl dancers are designed by Diana Rodgers, each adorned with traditional Celtic knots.

 Free Money...with the two new databases now available through the Pioneer Library System, getting information is a few computer clicks away. Grant information through the Foundation Directory Online Professional and the Foundation’s Grants to Individuals Online are available to research free at the Moore Public Library 225 South Howard in Moore. Workshops covering the best way to use these great tools are also on the agenda.
Jana Moring, Cooperating Collection Supervisor with Pioneer Library System, will be presenting “how-to” programs. On Friday, March 5 at 10:00 a.m., Moring will cover the basics of the Foundation Directory Online Professional Database. Aimed primarily at non-profit organizations, this database is the nation’s most useful resource tool for grant-seeking and grant-making. Learning to navigate this database will help save valuable time when trying to find new funders, target your proposal, or advance your organization’s mission.
