The Irving Recreational Center on Vicksburg Avenue in Norman has now acquired the first 24-hour fully automated library* in the United States. This library is similar to a vending machine that holds a collection of 400 books, audiobooks, and DVDs for patrons to check out. Patrons can access this library at any time, day or night, to browse, check out items, return their items, pick up their holds, or pay their fines with credit cards.
The facility will have built-in security cameras to protect patrons' materials at all times. It is also fully ADA accessible and is covered to protect it and patrons from the elements.
The automated library was developed in and brought from China, which has many of these kinds of libraries scattered across the country to help conserve space yet also meet the needs of residents. It was purchased through the company known as EnvisionWare, which has sold many items to the Pioneer Library System.
