Geek The Library

What do you geek?

That’s the question staff members at the Southwest Oklahoma City Library are asking their customers as part of the national Geek the Library community awareness campaign.

Geek the Library features local educational material that introduces “geek” as a verb and encourages the public to talk about what they geek, whether it’s engineering, superheroes, music, zombies, or cooking. The campaign illustrates the fact that everyone is passionate about something—everyone geeks something—and that the library supports them all.

To get the message out in the community, the SOKC Library staff is planning a series of photo opportunities for community members to share their geeks. The first is a community photo day taking place all day Jan. 8 at the SOKC Library. Community members interested in taking part in the campaign will be able to visit the library (preferable dressed in black for picture quality), and have their photo taken. The photos will be added to the Pioneer Library System Flickr Page and will be available for download. Customers are encouraged to share the photos with their friends, post on their Facebook page, display in their place of business, or portray them in any way to helps get the word out about the library and what all it can offer.

Library staff members are also working on setting up photo sites in the community Feb. 10-17, as part of Love Your Library Month. Businesses in SOKC interested in hosting the library at their site during the week may call the library at (405) 979-2200 to set up a time.  Information about photo locations and other campaign events will be available on the PLS website, www.justsoyouknow.us/sokc.

Anybody who wants to have their photo taken, but cannot attend these scheduled events can call the library to schedule a time for their photo. Library staff is also available to attend community organization meetings, school family nights, homeowner association meetings, and other community events to photograph people for the campaign. Just call the library to set up a visit!

One goal of the campaign is to continue to spread the word about the relatively new library and all the services the library offers. The other goal is to get community members excited about supporting the library either as part of a Friends group start up team or as a financial or in-kind donor. By forming a Friends group and reaching donors, the SOKC Library staff can continue to provide programming for customers and participate in the local community.

The campaign is sponsored by OCLC, a nonprofit library cooperative that has provided services to help libraries deliver more to their users for four decades. Supported by a grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, OCLC partnered with Chicago-based marketing communications agency Leo Burnett USA to create the campaign.
