24-Hour Library

What it does: Allows 24-hr access to select books, movies and other items from the Pioneer catalog; retrieval of reserved items; item checkout and checkin; catalog searching; payment of fines; library account management.

Mediabank movie boxes

Vendor: Mediabank

In use since: 2009

Available at:  Norman, Norman West, Moore, Southwest Oklahoma City, Shawnee

What it does:  Automatically dispenses reserved DVD movies via a robotized mechanism, similar to a RedBox vending machine.  The Norman West movie box features a touchscreen interface and allows 24-hour search, reservation, checkout and checkin.  Movie boxes at all other Pioneer locations can be used during regular library hours.

MediaSurfer Self-Check Tablet Kiosk

What it does: Allows automatic checkout of iPads for in-library use for up to 2 hours. The machine is a self-contained charging and maintenance system for 16 iPads.

OverDrive Media Station and download stations

In use since: 2013; 2008

What it does: Overdrive Media Station is a touchscreen interface used to introduce the Pioneer OverDrive downloadable collection of ebooks, audiobooks and more.  It allows patrons to browse the collection, sample any of its titles and send links to the titles to their preferred device for checkout.

OverDrive download stations are self-service kiosks located at Pioneer branches which allow patrons to browse, checkout, download and transfer digital audiobooks to the compatible device of their choice.

RFID Modular Bin Sorter

What it does: Automatic, hands-free item checkin and sorting; checks in library items via RFID and sorts them via a conveyor belt into designated bins for all 11 Pioneer branches and separates items on reserve for customers.

ScanPro 2000 Microfilm Scanner

What it does: Digitally scans microfilm and microfiche so that images can be viewed, stored on and printed from a computer.  The included PowerScan Productivity Suite software with Optical Character Recognition (OCR) allows for word searching, copying selected page areas to the clipboard, and creating word-searchable PDFs.

What it does: This interactive whiteboard responds to both finger and pen to easily control a computer from a projected image. Included with every StarBoard is a set of software tools designed for multi-touch and multi-user collaboration.

Cisco TelePresence videoconferencing system

In use since: 2011

Available at: Shawnee and Purcell branches

What it does: This videoconferencing solution provides high-definition 1080p video, spatial audio, and a setup designed to link two physically separated rooms so they resemble a single conference room, regardless of location. Provided by a grant from OKConnect, this technology can be reserved for public use and a PLS technology expert can assist with setup and operation.

Online

  1. Visit Pioneer Library System’s Zinio for Libraries website justsoyouknow.us/zinio and select a magazine.
  2. Select Checkout Now (you will be prompted to login/create an account for the library’s Zinio)
  3. Click Start Reading (you will be prompted to login/create another account for Zinio.com)
    1. We suggest using the same login information for both accounts.
    2. Enjoy the full-color magazine!

Through the App
Available: Apple IOS | Android | Windows 8

  1. Follow steps 1 through 3 above in an internet browser.
  2. On your device, go to your App store and download the Zinio app.
  3. Open the Zinio app.
  4. Log into your Zinio.com account in the app.
  5. While you are on the main page of the app, tap on the symbol near the bottom or top of the screen (depending on the device you use) that looks like an open book. It might have the word read next to it if you have an apple product.
  6. The magazine that you selected online should be in your library. Tap on your free magazine and enjoy.
  7. If you choose a magazine from the shop while in the app, you will be charged for a subscription. The only way to get free magazines is to go back to your web browser and check out a magazine from the library’s Zinio website.

24 Hour Library MachineThe Pioneer Library System offers two 24 hour library locations in Norman for you to pick up and return library materials.  The 24 hour libraries are located on Vicksburg Ave. in front of Irving Middle School and 300 Norman Center Court in front of Norman Public Library West. Using the 24 hour library is fast and easy.

Select 24 Hour Library as Pickup Location

1. Find the item you want in the catalog
2. Click Place Hold button
      -If not already logged in, log in with 14-digit library card number and  4-digit PIN (usually last 4 digits of phone number)
3. Select a location to pick up materials
      -Norman East (On Vicksburg Ave.)
      -Norman West (At 300 Norman Center Court)
4. Click Request button to finalize
6. Click Return to Searching or Logout and Return to go back to the catalog to continue browsing

You will be notified by phone, email, text, or traditional mail when your hold is available for pick-up.

 

Pick Up Hold Items

1. Press Checkout
2. Scan library card
3. Enter PIN
4. Hold items will be dispensed from slot below screen
5. Press Print for receipt

 

Check Out Items

1. Press Check Out
2. Scan library card
3. Enter PIN
4. Type in number location of item (ex: 3456)
5. Press Check Out to confirm
6. Item will be dispensed from slot below screen
7. Press Print for receipt or Done to end session

 

Return Items

1. Press Return
2. Place items one at a time in slot below screen
3. Press Print for receipt

Pioneer Library System offers individual assistance for customers' digital devices.

Customers may use the walk-up counter at the Norman Public Library West  for quick assistance or schedule an appointment with the Virtual Library for more detailed assistance.

Customers with eReaders, mp3 players, smartphones, tablets, and laptops can be helped with:

  • learning how to use the device;
  • installing and configuring apps and software;
  • downloading books, music, and videos;
  • accessing business, genealogy, tutoring, and research resources;
  • and more!

30 minute or 1-hour appointments can be scheduled online, at least 24-hours in advance.

Set Up Software

 - Download and install OverDrive Media Console: www.overdrive.com/software/omc

 - For Apple Devices

         - Need a PC for WMA format audiobooks. May use Mac for MP3 audiobooks

         - Need iTunes 9.1 and up. Update your iTunes: www.apple.com/itunes/download

         - Configure iPad, iPhone, or iPod for manual management

                  1. Connect device to computer and open iTunes

                  2. Select iPhone, iPad, or iPod in the Devices list

                  3. Click the “Summary” tab and select "Manually manage music and videos"

                  4. Click “Apply”

Download the audiobook to your computer:

1. Go to PLS OverDrive website: http://justsoyouknow.us/overdrive 

2. Click “Sign in” on the right side in the gray bar at the top and sign in with your library card number and PIN.

3. Find the book you want to download by searching or browsing and click on it.

4. Click “borrow” (Or click “place hold” to be added to the waiting list)

5. Click “Go to Bookshelf

6. Select the format you would like your audiobook to be in

7. Click on the “Download” button

8. Select “Open” when the box pops up and click “OK

9. OverDrive Media Console will open

10. Click “OK” when the box pops up asking where to place the file

11. Select the parts you want to download and click “OK” to begin download

12. The book will download into the OverDrive Media Console. You can listen to the book on the computer or transfer it to your device.

Transfer audiobook to your device:

1. Plug device into computer with USB cord

2. Select the book you want to transfer

3. Click the “Transfer” button along the top

4. The “Transfer Wizard” box will pop up and walk you through transferring the book

5. The book will transfer to your device and you can listen to it

These directions will assist you in downloading and transferring an ebook to a Kindle using a USB cord. This method is required for devices that do not have wireless internet capabilities. This method is also required for ALL ebooks published by the Penguin Publishing Company.

1. Go to the PLS OverDrive website: www.justsoyouknow.us/overdrive

2. Find the book you want to download. If the book is available for Kindle, you will see "Kindle Book"listed under Format Information.

3. Click "borrow", or click "place a hold" to be added to the waiting list.

4. Click "Proceed to Checkout."

5. Sign in with your library card number and 4-digit PIN.

6. Use the lending period dropdown menu to select a 7, 14, or 21 day checkout period.

7. Click "Confirm Checkout."

8. Click the "Get for Kindle" button.

9. You will be taken to amazon.com. If you have not already signed in to amazon.com, you will be prompted to do so.

10. You will see a green box with a yellow button on the right side of the screen.
